In Good Condition: Remove all traces of loose paint and contamination by sanding the entire surface well with 80 grit wet-dry sandpaper. Remove sanding residue.

In Poor Condition: Completely remove all old antifouling paint using Interstrip 299E for fiberglass and wood, and by sandblasting to near white metal for steel.

BARE FIBERGLASS: It is very important that bare fiberglass be properly prepared to prevent delamination of theantifouling paint. Remove mold release wax using one of the following Interlux products, YMA601 Fiberglass Surface Prep or Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202 following the product label instructions. Fill any surface imperfections with Interlux Watertite following the label instructions. After the surface has been properly prepared follow the application system below.

Bare Fiberglass - No Sanding System: Clean the surface following the preparation procedure above. Apply one coat of Interprotect 2000E or Fiberglass No-Sand Primer Follow the instructions on the label or product datasheet of the primer used. Following overcoating guidelines for the primer, apply at least two coats of Ultra-Kote allowing appropriate drying times.

Bare Fiberglass -Sanding System: Clean the surface following the preparation procedure above. Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue. Apply at least two coats of Ultra-Kote allowing appropriate drying times.

Bare Fiberglass - Blister Prevention System: Clean the surface following the preparation procedure above. Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue. Apply Interprotect 2000E to a thickness of 10 mils. Apply at least two coats of Ultra-Kote allowing appropriate drying times.

BARE WOOD: Sand with 80 grade (grit) paper. Remove sanding residue. Apply the first coat of Ultra-Kote thinned 10% with Special Thinner 216 or Brush Ease 433. Fill seams, if necessary, with Seam Compound Brown 30. Apply two or more coats of Ultra-Kote unthinned, allowing for the appropriate dry times

UNDERWATER METALS: Contact the Interlux Technical Service Department at 1-800-468-7589 for full information on how to properly prime underwater metals. Do not use on aluminum.

METHOD: Apply a minimum of 2 coats (3 on bare wood) by brush, short-nap roller or spray. To prevent premature failure, ensure correct amount of paint is applied using the coverage as a guide.

HINTS:

Mixing: Stir or shake contents thoroughly before use.
Thinner: Special Thinner 216 or Brush Ease 433.
Thinning: Thin only if necessary. Thin no more than 10%. Use Brush Ease 433 if roller or brush drags during application.
Cleaner: Special Thinner 216 or Brush Ease 433.
Airless Spray Pressure: 170-204 bar/2500-3000 psi. Tip Size: 0.53 mm/21 thou. Ultra-Kote must be thinned 5-10% by volume with Special Thinner 216 for airless spray application.
Conventional Spray Pressure Pot: Pressure: 3.44-4.47 bar/50-65 psi (gun pressure); 10-15 psi (pot pressure).
Tip Size: 1.8-2.2 mm/70-85 thou. Thin 10-15% with Special Thinner 216 for application by Pressure Pot.
Roller: Use a 3/8" nap solvent resistant roller.
Other: For application of Ultra-Kote to underwater metals such as stainless steel, cast iron, lead and bronze, see Interprotect® bulletin. Do not use on aluminum.
Sanding: When sanding antifouling paint use a vacuum sander that is attached to a properly maintained industrial vacuum with HEPA filters; if hand sanding of antifouling paint is necessary, wet sand only. Wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment. Never burn-off old antifouling paints.

Some Important Points

Product temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 29°C/85°F. Ambient temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 35°C/95°F. Substrate temperature should be minimum 10°C/50°F and maximum 35°C/95°F.

Compatibility/Substrates

Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only. Ultra-Kote can be applied to most popular antifouling paints as long as the old coating has been aged, is tightly adhered and is in sound condition. ***Do not apply Ultra-Kote over graphite antifoulings. Do not apply over soft antifouling paints. Do not apply Ultra-Kote over aluminum.***
